Medaram Jatara: Asia’s Largest Tribal Festival:(Culture, Faith, and Economy in the Sammakka–Sarakka Jatara)
This book is not merely an archive but a collection of repeated journeys to Medaram by bike, bus, and, often, forest trails. I first visited in 2018, and between 2022 and 2024, due to COVID-19, I returned to the Sammakka-Sarakka fair repeatedly, not as an observer, but as a constant listener and devotee. What I encountered was not just a large tribal festival, but a system of temples, priestly hierarchies, material devotion and faith, as well as an economy, governance, gender relations, and an ethical system of living that lacked environmental responsibility. Medaram is often described in hyperbole: the largest tribal community (Koya) in Asia, one of the largest gatherings in the world, and a logistical challenge for the state. While these descriptions are factually accurate, I believe they are analytically inadequate. They describe scale, but not meaning. They record numbers, but not values. This book is written to bridge that gap.
The main purpose of this book is to ask a simple yet powerful question: How can a society be ethically governed at scale without institutional dominance? Medaram provides a local and contemporary answer in which faith is not controlled by doctrine, the economy is not controlled by extraction, and power does not flow from a hierarchy. Instead, moral memory, ritual repetition, and a system of collective responsibility hold it together. The Sammakka–Sarakka tradition is often described as a myth or legend. In this book, it is presented as a moral history – a memory of resistance without retaliation, leadership without state authority, and justice without violence. As a moral entity, the Sammakka legacy continues to shape everyday behavior: how people make vows, how they trade, how they endure hardship, how they relate to the land, and how women exercise power through care and continuity
